Relationship between Serum Uric Acid Level and Metabolic Syndrome in the Elderly

Abstract
Background: Many epidemiological studies have shown that hyperuricemia was related to metabolic syndrome. However, there is little data concerning the relationship between uric acid and metabolic syndrome among Korean elderly people.

Methods: Subjects for this cross-sectional study were 523 men and women aged 60 years and more, who visited the health promotion center of one university hospital in Chungcheongnam-do for general health check-up from July 2008 to December 2010. Study people divided into three groups according to serum uric acid level tertiles.

Results: The proportion of male, current smoking, and heavy alcohol consumption increased significantly with increasing serum uric acid level (P£¼0.001). Waist circumference and triglyceride increased, and fasting blood sugar and HDL-cholesterol decreased significantly from first tertile to third tertile of serum uric acid level (P£¼0.05). Compared to the subjects in the first tertile, those in the third tertile were at significantly increased risk of metabolic syndrome (odds ratio=1.95, 95% confidence interval: 1.14-3.34, P=0.015).

Conclusion: These findings show that serum uric acid level is associated with metabolic syndrome.
